Yala National Park

Leopards, lagoons and the best dawn of your trip

Blocks 1–2 closed, due to reopen 16 October 2026. Udawalawe is open · What it means for your trip

Yala is where Sri Lanka's leopards are easiest to find, among granite boulders, thorny scrub and lagoons busy with birds and crocodiles. We collect you from Ella, the south coast or Tissa, put you in a private jeep at the gate and drop you wherever you're heading next.

  • 1

    Sri Lanka's best leopard odds

Block 1 has one of the highest leopard densities in the world. A sighting is never guaranteed, but your chances here beat any other park on the island.

  • 2

    Big variety, big scenery

Elephants, crocodiles, buffalo, peacocks and more than 200 bird species, set among rocky outcrops, lagoons and dunes by the sea.

  • 3

    Made for the Ella-to-beach day

A morning drive slots neatly between the hills and the south coast: pickup in the dark, safari at dawn, beach by mid-afternoon.

  • 4

Your own jeep, your own pace

No strangers and no rushing. Linger with an elephant family or leave a crowded sighting behind: it's your call.

What a safari here feels like

Your day starts in the dark. If you're staying in Ella or on the coast, your driver collects you while the town is still asleep, and by first light you're in the queue at Palatupana gate with a long line of other hopeful jeeps. Then the gate opens, engines start, and Yala unfolds: red tracks, grey granite boulders, thorny scrub and lagoons fringed with painted storks and basking crocodiles.

It's a park of moments. A peacock fans out its tail in the road. A herd of buffalo stands chest-deep in a waterhole. An elephant mother steers her calf across the track in front of you. And somewhere on the rocks, if luck is with you, a leopard watches the whole show with total indifference. Block 1 has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, which is why people come, and why your driver will scan every branch and boulder.

The tracks are dusty and bumpy, and it's hot by ten o'clock. Bring a hat, a light scarf for the dust, binoculars if you have them, and plenty of patience.

When to go

Yala is at its best from February to July, when the dry season shrinks the waterholes and animals come out into the open. May to July is also the best window for sloth bears, when the palu trees fruit. December to March is the busiest season for visitors, so expect more jeeps.

Most years, Blocks 1 and 2 close for a few weeks in September or October during the worst of the drought. In 2026 the closure was set for 14 September to 15 October. Dates are only announced two or three weeks ahead, so if you're travelling then, we'll confirm before your day. If the main blocks are shut, Udawalawe is the easy swap, and Yala's Block 5 (Galge entrance) may suit some routes.

Morning, afternoon or full day?

  • Morning means cool air, soft light and the most animal activity. It's also the busiest time at the gate, and it means a very early pickup from Ella or the south coast.
  • Afternoon is calmer at the gate and kinder to your alarm clock. Animals stir again as the heat fades, and the late light on the lagoons is beautiful. Choose it for a lie-in or a travel day.
  • Full day is for the dedicated. You go deeper than the half-day jeeps and keep looking after they've gone home, with a compulsory midday rest at a designated picnic spot inside the park (you can't leave and come back in on the same ticket). It's long and hot, and it gives you Yala's best leopard odds.

The Matchmaker suggests a session for your route and shows the pickup time for your date.

A better, kinder safari

Yala's jeep crowding is real. When someone spots a leopard, word spreads by phone and dozens of jeeps can converge in minutes, revving and jostling for a view. It's stressful for the animal and a bit grim for you. Your safari doesn't have to be like that.

  • Ask your driver to keep a respectful distance and switch off the engine at sightings. Since 1 January 2024, only jeep drivers trained and certified by the Department of Wildlife Conservation may drive in Yala, and the good ones are happy to hang back.
  • Don't chase the leopard at any cost. If a sighting turns into a scrum, move on. An elephant family all to yourselves beats the back of forty jeeps.
  • Stay on the track and keep the noise down. No feeding animals, no leaning out for selfies, and take your rubbish home.
  • Go when others don't: an afternoon drive, a weekday, or a date outside the December to March peak.

Questions

Yala FAQs

Is Yala open in September and October?

Often not fully. Blocks 1 and 2 close for a few weeks in the dry season most years, and in 2026 the closure was set for 14 September to 15 October because of drought. Dates are announced only two or three weeks ahead, so if your date falls in September or October we'll confirm nearer the time and, if those blocks are shut, suggest Udawalawe or, if it suits your route, Yala's Block 5 (Galge entrance).

Will we see a leopard?

A leopard is possible on any drive, and Yala gives you the best odds in Sri Lanka, especially from February to July and on a full day. Nobody can guarantee one, though, and we never will.

How early is the pickup from Ella or Mirissa?

Early. Both are about 2¾ hours from the gate, so a morning drive means a pickup before 3 am. The afternoon drive lets you leave in the late morning instead, and the Matchmaker shows the exact times for your day.

What's included in the price?

Your private car or van and driver for the whole day, including waiting during the safari, a private jeep with a certified driver, and your park tickets (we confirm the exact fees before you travel). There's no deposit: you pay on the day, and changes are free up to 48 hours before.

How crowded is Yala?

In peak season (roughly December to March) hundreds of jeeps can queue at the main gate before dawn, and popular sightings draw a crowd. An afternoon drive, a full day that goes deeper, or a weekday away from the holidays is calmer.

How many people fit in one jeep?

Up to six. Bigger groups get a second jeep, and the estimate works that out for you.
